“It is an imminent question Tremblay poses in regards to Montreal in 1965 - and imminent still in this moment of the United States’ evolving history. What will happen when one of us suddenly has access to power - or perceived power? What do we do with the rage we cannot express? With circumstance we cannot change? This play invites us into a moment in life, in history, maybe not so dissimilar to the one we’re in now. It is here we are presented with a decision…Who are we going to be?”

This is an excerpt from director Acadia Barrengos’ director statement that I think encapsulates a lot of the themes of this production and our conversations through out the design process of Les Belles-Souers.

Inspired by homes and apartments pictured in Canadian family scrapbooks, catalogues from years before, and pieces of my own family history, this design, and specifically the dressing, was a sincere effort of love for me. The design, drafting package, paint package, and properties packages were completed in a week and a half turn around time and couldn’t have happened without support from my lovely Co-Designer, Jordan, and our assistant, Natalia.
